Players Championship

It doesn't quite get "Major" status, but the Players Championship from TPC Sawgrass gets pretty close, and the bookmakers have reacted by offering their now usual extra places - with Sky Bet leading the way with seven places paying 1/4 odds.

That's definitely enough to tempt us to take a few punts on this one, and we'll start by ruling out Dustin Johnson. There is no doubting he is the best player in the world right now, and he starts as favourite as a result of his astonishing form this campaign. His record here however has been woeful over the years and it's probably the last venue you would choose to back the American. He finished 28th last year, 69th in 2015 and 59th in 2014.

Rory McIlroy is second in the betting at 10/1 and he has a much better record here in recent years, but at the price he's probably short enough. Instead, let's start with Sergio Garcia, who appeals at 18/1.

The Spaniard is a former winner here, and has carded three top 8 finishes in his last four starts here as well. His victory in the Masters leaves him in great spirits of course, and he's had a nice extended break since then, so should come in well rested up.

Justin Thomas looks a decent bet at 25/1 as well and comes back looking to improve on last season's 3rd place. He's already carded two rounds of 65 here in just two starts and really enjoys the challenge - taking to twitter to express just how excited he is ahead of the week!

Last season's performance seemed to act as a catalyst for his form, and he's not looked back - winning three events in 26 starts since then, and finished in the top 10 in 10 of those.

Finally, Adam Scott is 35/1 - he is enjoying a reasonable form, and likes the course, so it looks a touch long. He's posted three top 20 finishes in the last five renewals of this event and finished inside the Top 15 in six of his nine starts this season, missing just the single cut in the Shell Houston Open.
