Polona Hercog will be delighted to have made the second round at SW19 after coming through qualifying and navigating an opening round match with Annika Beck. It could be time that her return to top class tennis takes a set-back however when she faces Vavara Lepchenko.

Hercog has endured a torrid 8 months since retiring ill from her match with Angeqlique Kerber in the US Open last season. That illness turned out to be appendicitis, requiring surgery, which saw her ruled out until May this season. She failed to qualify for the French Open as a result of her rustiness, but got back in the swing by winning an event in Brescia, but it was a non-tour competition with no-one approaching the standard of Lepchenko involved. A good qualifying draw followed which saw her play no-one inside the world’s Top 120 and it could just be the end of the road for her this time around.

Lepchenko isn’t the strongest grass court player, but has decent form on hard courts which should transfer reasonably well for this one. A first round win over Lauren Davis was a great result (she was 7/4 outsider) and she looks in decent nick.
