The final round of Champions League group matches conclude this evening, and Liverpool v Spartak Moscow stands out as a match which could be incredibly entertaining. The way the group has played out means Spartak could still top the standings, or find themselves playing in the Europa League.

The equation is simple. If Spartak beat Liverpool, they top the group, while a draw or defeat will see them out, regardless of what happens elsewhere. So they simply have to come here and attack until the very end, and given Liverpool are strong favourites for the match, it’s not hugely likely that Spartak will be in a position to lead and defend their position.
Looking at how both sides have got on this season shows a similar pattern of exciting matches. 11 of Liverpool’s 23 matches have ended with four goals or more goals, while for Spartak it is 11 out of 26 matches this season with four or more. These two are both clearly stronger in attack than they are in defence, and in a match where winner takes all, it’s hard to see anything other than an end to end battle.
